Scientific data platforms for biotech: build the right shortlist

There is no single best platform for every biotech. The useful shortlist changes depending on whether the programme is chemistry-led, biology-led, ELN-centred, regulated, virtual, reliant on CROs or constrained by private-infrastructure requirements.

Short answer

Start with Adroit, CDD Vault and Dotmatics for chemistry-heavy discovery and compound-registration requirements. Include Benchling when molecular biology, Registry, Notebook and Inventory are central. Consider Sapio Sciences, Labguru, Scispot, Revvity Signals, IDBS, BIOVIA, LabKey, LabWare or STARLIMS when broader ELN, LIMS, regulated or enterprise laboratory workflows drive the programme.

This is a category-led shortlist, not a league table. Buyers should verify current capabilities and run the same representative workflow with each finalist.

Shortlist by requirement

Requirement patternPlatforms to investigateWhat to test
Chemistry-heavy discoveryAdroit, CDD Vault, DotmaticsRegistration rules, salts, stereochemistry, reactions, substructure search, SAR and assay relationships.
Mixed chemistry and biologyAdroit, Dotmatics, CDD Vault, BenchlingWhether both domains share usable identifiers and relationships rather than only appearing behind one login.
Molecular biology and lineageBenchling, Dotmatics, Sapio Sciences, LabKeySequence modelling, constructs, lineage, biologics registration, inventory and experiment capture.
Integrated ELN-led workflowDotmatics, CDD Vault, Benchling, Revvity Signals, IDBS, Labguru, ScispotTemplates, witnessing, data capture, search, registration links, instruments and compliance controls.
On-premises or air-gapped deploymentAdroit plus enterprise suppliers that can evidence the required architectureFunctional parity, networking, identity, backups, updates, support boundary and operational ownership.
CRO or customer-facing data deliveryAdroit and products with proven external collaboration workflowsTenant separation, permissions, branding, project access, auditability, download and API behaviour.
Regulated laboratory operationsSapio Sciences, LabWare, STARLIMS, IDBS, BIOVIA and other validated-workflow specialistsValidation responsibility, audit trails, electronic signatures, quality processes and lifecycle support.

Why generic “best platform” lists fail

Scientific model differs

A sequence registry, compound registry, ELN and LIMS solve overlapping but different problems.

Depth beats checkboxes

“Structure search” can mean anything from a basic drawing lookup to controlled stereochemical and tautomer-aware matching.

Deployment changes the shortlist

Cloud policy, data sovereignty, air gaps and integration boundaries may remove an otherwise attractive platform.

Implementation is part of the product

Configuration, migration, validation, training and internal administration determine the real time and cost.

A defensible selection process

  1. Write ten scientific questions that the current environment cannot answer efficiently.
  2. Assemble representative structures, entities, assay data, files and awkward edge cases.
  3. Give every supplier the same scenario and acceptance criteria.
  4. Measure scientific correctness, provenance, configuration effort and elapsed time.
  5. Request the target architecture, implementation plan, data-export route and total operating responsibilities.
  6. Speak with customers whose scale, science and deployment resemble yours.
Do not select from a feature checklist alone. A short proof using representative data is more informative than a polished generic demonstration.

Editorial method and disclosure

This guide is published by Adroit DI Ltd and therefore includes Adroit as a potential supplier. It deliberately avoids a numerical ranking because suitability depends on the workflow. Supplier descriptions should be checked against current official documentation, contractual commitments and a representative proof.

Adroit's position is described on the platform page. The comparison framework is expanded in the scientific data platform buyer's guide.
